Opel in Australia

I was very suprised about Opel coming to Australia. I first noticed the Opel name in Australia whilst watching an interview on The Footy Show the other week.

The press blurb comes in the form as per below:

“Two weeks ago our club made a decision based on integrity, and although that left us without a major sponsor, two weeks later we are proud to say that we have two outstanding sponsors - Webjet and now Opel,” said Melbourne president Don McLardy. "It’s an outstanding result for our club, and we are rapt that Opel has jumped on board. Although they will officially launch in Australia later this year, they are a brand that is of similar heritage to the Melbourne Football Club - we have both been in operation for 150 years or more.”

Opel Australia managing director Bill Mott added, "Opel are proud to be launching in Australia with the Demons as our close partner, just as we are excited to be bringing quality German engineering and design to Australians at an accessible price".

Sponsorship aside, I do wonder where this leaves Holden.

They have the mainstay of the VE Commodore and Ute - still selling in Australia as well as the Caprice.

But look at the rest of the line up - re-badged Chevy's that don't exactly set the world on fire. In fact, you could even go as so far to say that these are just posh Daewoo's. I have always associated Chevrolet with models like the Taheo, Surburban, Impala and Malibu. And let us not forget the legends that are the Corvette and Camaro.

It seems that GM Australia are dumbing down the Holden brand a little - offering cars that were once Holden's - like the Corsa (which was badged as the Barina) as upmarket Euro spec models. I would rather drive a Holden badged Astra than Chevy based Cruze.

Would be see a COTF based on the Insignia bodyshell running as part of the V8 SuperCars? A very long shot and I doubt it - but you never know.

I think Holden will always remain - to remove the brand from Australia completely will be the biggest mistake ever from GM and it is extremely unlikely that this will happen. But will savvy consumers start looking at models like the Astra and Insignia and think that they are a better bet than  the Holden equivalents? Again this is possible, and that might impact sales.

What does it also mean for the V6?

As a traditionalist I would plonk for a VE - no questions asked. it is a lovely car to drive and to me it is an Aussie icon as the Falcon is to Ford. But both the Insignia and Commordore will be running V6's so it could be said that both would be in direct competition rather than complement each other from the GM stable.

It will be interesting to see how Opel fairs in Australia as there is such a loyal following for Holden. They may well get the OPC models which will then square off against Ford's XR range. I am confident it will not displace Holden as part of the GM Portfolio in Aussie, but I suspect that you could see a downturn in sales of the lower end Holden cars.

Gone in 90 minutes - Christmas crackdown on drink drive idiots

Traditionally, Chrimbo is a time where complete bellend's decide that it is acceptable to be intoxicated with alcohol and drive a car.

Wrong.

It is a disgusting habit that can ruin lives esp. of those of the victims of a drink driver. The loss of life can easily be avoided.

I am pleased to see this initiative by the police this festive period as reported in today's Metro, and hope it is rolled out 365 days of the year. My only addition would be to instantly crush the car of the drink driver - no questions asked. And if the convicted driver complains, well tough - please then explain why you thought it was acceptable to drink 'x' pints and still believe it is OK to drive......

Hot Wheels 1992 Ford Mustang

A good little model from the Hot Wheels 2011 Racing Series.

I have to hand it to the HW Team at Mattel - they do do a good selection of Americana.

As with most of the models in the HW, I am very tempted to add some additional detailing to the headlights and rear end....

Nissan Elgrand - rival for the Euro Family carriers??

I love the sheer Japanese-ness of these vehicles. This is my first proper view of the new Elgrand and for my money gives the VW Caravelle/Sharan a good run in terms of space and size.

This is a Japanese only model, but exports are sent over to Asia as there is demand for it, along with the Toyota Vellfire and Alphard.

The design is a lot smoother and shapely than usual but still retains the classic Japanese boxiness of people carriers. I doubt that this model will be seen in Europe - Renault own a majority stake in Nissan so a duplication of model here, but you can see some of the Escape influence in the design.

Hot Wheels Ferrari FF

The eternal question is "why"?

Why is there an exclusive deal with Hot Wheels to have Ferrari's in all scales to the detriment of Matchbox?

This is something I don't understand from Mattel one bit. What harm is there in giving Matchbox a Ferrari casting - after all, it all started off with MB75 Ferrari Berlinetta from the Lesney era.....so why not continue?

FF meaning "Ferrari Four", for four seats and four-wheel drive) is a grand tourer presented by Ferrari on March 1, 2011 at the Geneva Motor Show. It is Ferrari's first production four-wheel drive model. The body style has been described as a shooting-brake, a type of sporting station wagon/estate car with two doors. It replaced the 612 Scaglietti grand tourer. The FF has a top speed of 335 km/h (208 mph) and it accelerates from zero to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.7 seconds.

Problem I have is this. Although I enjoy this casting, the lack of detailing shits me a tad. How hard would it be to add some red light detail to the rump of the model? No doubt there will be detailers like Eric Loon (mad Malaysian guy, whose blog I follow - love his way of expressing his thoughts in English!) who will no doubt add this to the model, but I cannot help thinking that whilst the casting is good, I feel a little short changed.

Am I expecting too much from the price point? Possibly. But then so much of the diecast budget from Mattel is directed to Hot Wheels, rather than Matchbox, I expect a little more. You only have to look at the Matchbox Holden VE Ute SSV in terms of detail - it can be done......

Bburago's 1/43 Subaru Impreza WRX STi

I would have liked to see this one in the traditional Mica Blue paint job - for me the Subaru branding is a little too much on the sides.

But again, you have to give credit to Bburago - they are producing a variety of models that are officially being licensed. And the bodyshells are fairly accurately re-created.

It is a wonder how much effort Mattel are trying to put in with regards to getting licenses in comparison to Hot Wheels and Bburago......

Hot Wheels Porsche Boxster

As Matchbox seem content on keeping the 911 casting going, Hot Wheels is allowed to use every other by the looks of it -

I do like the detailing on this one - OK, the rear arse needs a spot of red to accent the tail lights, but yet again, another good little casting from the Hot Wheels stable.

I am now holding out for the 918 Spyder to be re-created.......

Hot Wheels 1971 Hemi Cuda

Another addition to the Americana stable of 1/64.

However, I can't for the life of me remember if this has already been created before in a previous year.

This is the one problem I have with HW castings - for example, the Ford Mustang. They reproduce this in Shelby, SuperSnake, GT500, Boss302....I mean the list just goes on -

So I really can't tell if I have bought this model under a previous guise. I think the only way I could really know for sure is if I checked all the HW's that I bought over the last few years.

Bugger, have forgotten about the casting - well, it sits well within the HW road garage. I am glad that Matchbox have not gone down this route and produce this kind of vehicle (Americana) - HW sticking with what they do best.

Reality is always different from the theory.....Vanguards MGB

I got very excited with regards to the Vanguards MGB Bronze Yellow (VA10709) when it was first announced at the start of the year. it looked the business from the pre-pro from the Corgi Website.

Those Maltese wheels were spot on and was something that really grated me on previous other models from the vangaurds range as they were never quite right in terms of accuracy.

As I was in the UK last week, Modelzone and Allders visted.

MGB available.

Quality Check followed and then viewed this -

Photobucket

(you will just have to tilt your head - Photobucket is not playing ball).

This infuriated me - why on earth can Corgi not get this right with the wheels yet again? Tempting me with the pre-pro pictures, and then in real life it is a total let down.

I refuse to accept poor production models any more. It is getting beyond a joke. Why can the wheels NOT reflect what has been created via the pre-pro???? This makes the model flawed and as a result I did not by this one. I have the same problem on the MkIII Cortina 2.0 GXL.

Absolute joke and to be honest I am gutted. Hornby, this is not good enough.
